Corporate Away Days - A worthwhile use of company time?

Recently, I asked my pretty extensive LinkedIn network to share with me their thoughts and memories of the best and worst off site meetings and away days that they had experienced.
Deafening silence for the first few days and then a couple of people posted comments which ranged from the best memories being non work focused outings/trips away where the purpose was primarily about fun and booze (remember those?) and the worst involved being locked in an uninspiring venue - sometimes for days engaging in 'leadership exercises.'
One of my network even said she spent 'the best part of a day staring into a colleague's eyes down two toilet rolls!' Another contact said that he had spent two days in the height of summer with his team and their boss (whom they all detested) in the centre of the room and being asked to provide feedback on his management style. Cringe.
It is also interesting that when asking friends and family about their experiences of these kind of events - the look on their faces is always one of eye rolling and tales of uninspiring venues, bad coffee and seemingly pointless team bonding exercises with any benefits or insights quickly forgotten after the day.
Surely there has to be a better way?
This is one of the main reasons behind setting up Creative Happenings - to help organisations inject more meaning, inspiration and yes fun into these kind of events.
